An autumn house warming.

Light my fire

Hello from Amsterdam. It's about one in the morning, early Monday. Everyone's asleep and I'm in the living room typing in the darkness, listening to George Michael's Cowboys and Angels.

I like this song. I remember first hearing it in the early mornings when dad would drive me to school. I was thirteen, maybe fourteen, and I'd be sprawled out half asleep in the back seat. For some reason or other, the deejay on the radio seemed to love this song, playing it most mornings. The first notes of the piano would break the silence as the song started out, and in the early light I'd stare out the window, and float through the journey to school.

I listen to it because it reminds me of that time with dad. The quiet of my heart in the morning. The pale blue sky. The simplicity of it all.

Europe in several hours. I'm leaving the iPad at home and bringing a physical book instead. An experiment I suppose.

Form letter for all the boys who attended Mo's bachelor party in New Orleans:

Hey honey bunny,

I know you must be wondering how the weekend went - I thought I'd sum up our awesome adventure in a note! I know we're not supposed to tell anyone what happens during bachelor weekend but I know you can keep a secret!

So here goes....

Napa Valley is the most wondrous and tranquil place! Magical even! I wouldn't have been surprised if we had seen unicorns grazing and angels with harps floating about! It felt like the Hamptons, but with vineyards!

I feel so recharged right now - we pretty much spent the entire weekend lazing about: golfing, tasting wine, and going for ridiculous fine dining dinners! Oh and we all had facials and massages at the Four Seasons! It was so relaxing that I fell asleep on the massage table!

Anyways, it wouldn't have been a bachelor party without some craziness right....

Adam very boldly suggested that we pop our collars for the entire evening AND WE DID JUST THAT! IT WAS SO BADASS!

New England represent!!

Everyone totally thought we were these big time bankers or consultants! LIVING ON THE EDGE!

Okay I'd better stop before the boys kill me. If they find out they might burn my khakis or something, or worse, make me shop at Gap or Old Navy!

love you baby! Remember - I didn't tell you anything!

PS Here's a photo of us boys rocking it in Napa!

O that awful deepdown torrent O and the sea the sea crimson sometimes like fire and the glorious sunsets and the figtrees in the Alameda gardens yes and all the queer little streets and the pink and blue and yellow houses and the rosegardens and the jessamine and geraniums and cactuses and Gibraltar as a girl where I was a Flower of the mountain yes when I put the rose in my hair like the Andalusian girls used or shall I wear a red yes and how he kissed me under the Moorish wall and I thought well as well him as another and then I asked him with my eyes to ask again yes and then he asked me would I yes to say yes my mountain flower and first I put my arms around him yes and drew him down to me so he could feel my breasts all perfume yes and his heart was going like mad and yes I said yes I will Yes.

Where are we? Or is it pretty obvious?

I kinda want to suggest The Magnetic Fields: Luckiest Guy on the Lower East Side as the main song. Oh you know what I'm talking about.

I have been advised that we have secured Sundance tickets to Troll Hunter and Beats, Rhymes & Life. Score!

Sidenote: Troll Hunter was actually playing at a local theater when I was in Oslo. However I was worried that I did not understand Norwegian and there would be no English subtitles.

Back in the country after 2 weeks of running around. Brought back pseudo-cheesy t-shirts for the roommates that I'd actually wear. Given the amount of culinary adventuring, I'd guess that I'm twice the size. Gym mother fucker gym. Beefcake baby, beefcake.

It's about six on a Sunday morning and I'm torn between trying to go back to bed, and cleaning up, making breakfast, doing some work. Perhaps I can sort my life out later.

This year has turned out rather interesting to say the least, with its selection of first, second and third courses. Nervous in a good way. Haven't felt like this in a while.

This will be a good year. I can make it so.

No more shopping. You don't need anything else. Do not argue.

Exercise 4 times a week, cardio.

Work during work hours. Focus, do not be distracted.

Buy my own apartment.

Save money.

Buy those shares. Hold.

Floss every day, also gargle.

Stop living beyond my means.

We stopped by Republic Polytechnic this afternoon for a visit, checking out student portfolios and having a discussion with the department heads about curriculum and internships in interactive technology and arts. That's Uncle Han pre-briefing the team.

Saw some pretty amazing student work, but I think they need to crank up the competition and creativity. Being decent isn't good enough anymore, these students have to want to blow everyone away.

I am in Singapore.

I actually got here maybe a week ago, but took a side trip to Penang with my mother and brother. A culinary side trip to be exact. We roamed the city in search of the best wanton noodles, Penang char kway teow, Hokkien prawn noodles and lord knows everything else. Yum. It was a marathon of epic proportions.

In any event, I am back in Singapore. We've made it to the last day of the year, and I'm hoping it ends up being the last good day of the year.

And for the last day, today does feel good though. Really good. Something about it feels open and clear and I do not feel the normal stress around errands to run and people to see. I am excited to do nothing today except curl up and read.

In the evening we've a simple Chinese dinner planned somewhere nearby, and then we'll be meeting my sister, who arrives from Hong Kong this afternoon.

Happy new year everyone.

There is a bag of maybe 50 Island Creek oysters in the fridge. Oh yeah.

I am tempted to figure out pasta with oysters, garlic, breadcrumbs, and maybe shiitake?
